Stephen Zagala

World Cultures Research Fellow

Stephen was born in Vanuatu and returned as an anthropologist, with a specialisation in visual culture, to work on heritage management and community development projects through UNESCO and the Vanuatu Cultural Centre.

He has spent much of his professional life engaged with contemporary art, as an educator, commentator and curator. Most recently, he held the position of Senior Curator at Monash Gallery of Art in Melbourne, where he curated over 60 exhibitions and doubled the size of their nationally significant collection of photography.

Stephen’s fellowship at the South Australian Museum is directed toward using photography to invigorate the Pacific Cultures Gallery and facilitate greater community engagement with the Pacific collection
