Duncan Stewart migrated to Australia in 1838 settling in the south-east of South Australia in 1854. Both Stewart and his mother, Christina Smith, were actively involved in the lives of Australian Aboriginal people in the South-east of South Australia. The Stewart collection in the South Australian Museum Archives comprises a draft publication entitled 'Aborigines of the Buandik Tribe of the South East of South Australia'.
