Journey back in time at Fossil Fest 2019!

Join us at the South Australian Museum as we explore South Australia’s incredible prehistoric past, with a long weekend of FREE hands-on activities, talks, performances and trails for children and families.

Discover how ancient fossils can shape our understanding of the world we live in and how cutting edge science is unlocking the story of life on earth.

All Fossil Fest activities and bookings are not required, unless otherwise stated.

  • Meet South Australian Museum palaeontologists in the Explorers’ Tent
  • Professor Flint live on stage

  • Make your own state fossil to take home
  • Early years area featuring Dig-a-Dino
  • Fossil Finders scavenger hunt
  • Family-friendly palaeontology talks

Program schedule:

Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 April

All day (10:00 – 16:00)

  • Head to the South Australian Museum Explorers’ Tent to meet our palaeontologists and try your hand at fossil preparation
  • Get to work in our dig pits and see which fossils you can identify
  • Meet the Beach Energy team and make your own cast of our state fossil, Spriggina, to take home
  • Check out our early years activities, including Dig-A-Dino and story time with our Young Explorers team

  • Follow our Fossil Finders Scavenger Hunt and discover the many incredible fossils on display inside the Museum
  • Have you found a fossil of your own? Head to the Fossil ID station, where staff from our Discovery Centre can help you identify it

  • Dig in to a selection of fossil food including dinosaur nuggets, house-made cookies and jelly cups. Takeaway coffee will be available, along with ice-age-creams for the whole family 

At selected times throughout the day:

  • SATURDAY ONLY: Official opening and welcome to country on the Fossil Fest stage (front lawn) 11:00
  • SATURDAY EVENING ONLY MUSEUM MEMBERS EVENT: 'Night at the Museum' sleepover. Join us for an unforgettable family sleepover event. Explore the Museum at night with Prof Flint as your guide, watch a movie surrounded by ancient artefacts and sleepover in your own personalised teepee; Bookings essential. Suitable for ages 8 - 14 years. Please note, you must be a Museum Member to attend the sleepover. 
  • Professor Flint on the Fossil Fest stage (front lawn): 10:30, 12:30 and 14:30
  • Palaeontology talks on the Fossil Fest stage (front lawns): 11:30 and 13:30
  • Fossil ID with the Discovery Centre 11:00 - 15:00



Monday 15 April

All day:

  • Dig-a-Dino and the early years play space (front lawn)
  • Dig pits (front lawn)
  • Fossil finders scavenger hunt (throughout the Museum)
  • South Australian Museum Explorers’ Tent (front lawn):
    • Observe fossil preparation
    • Handle specimens from our world famous collections
    • Meet palaeontologists and learn about their fascinating work
  • Have you found a fossil of your own? Head to the Fossil ID station, where staff from our Discovery Centre can help you identify it

  • Cast your own version of South Australia's state fossil (front lawn) 

At selected times throughout the day:

  • Museum tours with Professor Flint: 10:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30 and 15:30 - this is a booked activity. Please book your spot here. BOOKED OUT.
