PartnershipsThe South Australian Museum acknowledges the dynamic and committed support from all of its partners without which it could not look to initiate, implement and achieve a vibrant program of activities, development, research and events.
THE WATERHOUSE CLUB INCThe Waterhouse Club was established in 1987 to provide a new approach to the traditional role of a support group in an era of reducing public sector funding. The Club takes its name from the Museum's first Director. The Club's goal is to build a large network of supporters for the South Australian Museum who are active in the community and are well connected in business, government and artistic communities and importantly able to influence outcomes important to the future of the South Australian Museum. The Club's program offers a fine blend of entertainment and education in the company of the Museum's most articulate curators. The locations for these events range from the Museum's own special spaces to tourist destinations of world class. The objective is to make associating with the South Australian Museum fun, but also a significant amount of money is raised each year. View the program for 2003. The Club has developed international links with overseas institutions to advance the role of the South Australian Museum as a gateway to the outback for overseas visitors. A very successful Flinders Ranges Expedition was run in conjunction with the Friends of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University. The leaders of the Club's events are typically professionals or senior managers who have a passion for a subject or an area rich in natural history and enjoy creating an event around it which will make the shared learning experience fun for all. For this reason, the Club's events show rich variety and often an unconventional streak. The Club believes that its annual auction of the naming rights of recently discovered species found by curators is a world first. This truly creative idea allowed the successful bidder to nominate the name that would identify the creature for ever. The event was promoted as offering an opportunity to immortalise a name, possibly one's own. The Club welcomes new members and participants in its varied program of events. FRIENDS OF THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM INC.ABN 6468092334 The Friends of the South Australian Museum or FOSAM, is an organisation, set up in 1965, to foster the interests of the Museum. It is a small but active group which carries out a variety of activities. Interested members of the public are invited to become members by paying a modest subscription - email samfriends@saugov.sa.gov.au or telephone (08) 8207 7389. Museum Tours Providing the Museum's volunteer guides is one of the most important roles of FOSAM; with help from the Museum, the guides are trained and organised by FOSAM. Free daily tours are offered to the public at the following times:
In addition, a volunteer guide opens the Discovery Centre from 2 pm to 4 pm on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Besides the free public tours, exclusive group tours may be booked at other times. As a means of raising funds, a modest fee is changed for such tours. For enquiries or bookings, please telephone the office or send an email. Functions Throughout the year, FOSAM arranges a number of functions, which include interesting talks, behind the scenes tours in the Museum, outings and social activities. In 2002, less serious activities designed as fund raisers include the quiz night and a hilarious debate planned for July. Anyone interested is welcome to attend functions, for which an appropriate small charge is made, discounted for members. Junior Friends A lively Junior Friends group offers special activities to interest children from 7 to 12 years of age. Family membership of FOSAM is available, or children may by themselves become Junior Friends on payment of a small subscription. Fundraising Membership subscriptions are designed to provide the running expenses of FOSAM. Funds raised from booked tours and from various activities are ultimately used to support the Museum. For example, in the past, FOSAM has funded the purchase of items for the Museum's displays and collections and has made contributions towards the various galleries. Donations to FOSAM's Research Fund are tax deductible. This fund has been used to provide an annual research grant to the Museum. This year, a FOSAM Honours Scholarship was provided for an annual University Honours student undertaking research in the Museum. Donations are very welcome to support this fund. Please email or telephone the office. |
