The Galleries
The Museum public galleries are available for hire after hours
and offer a great venue for a really unique function. Choose from
the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery, Mawson Gallery, Minerals
Gallery, Pacific Cultures Gallery, Foreign Mammals Gallery, Main
Foyer, and exhibition areas.
 

The galleries can be used for a variety of events including book
and product launches, end of year Christmas cocktails and conference
dinners to name a few. They can seat up to 100 people for a dinner
or up to 300 people for cocktail parties.
The Front Lawns
The Museumâs front lawns offer a unique location on North Terrace for
special open air events.
The Historic Armoury Building and Courtyard
The Armoury, built in the 1850s, is a charming colonial building at the
rear of the Museum. The entrance to the gallery, on the first floor, is
by way of an external stone double stairway. Wheelchair access is available
also.
The Gallery is suitable for cocktail parties, dinners, meetings and conferences;
in fact, any occasion! There is seating for 80 guests.
A kitchen area with dishwasher, microwave/convection oven is also
available for use, with hire in the Armoury. Added facilities
include electronic whiteboard, overhead projector, television,
video, slide projector and screen, board table and chairs.
A lawned forecourt function area, which can be utilised for Al Fresco
dining, can be incorporated in to the Armoury Gallery hire.
The Royal Society Rooms
The historical Royal Society rooms seat up to 70 people for meetings and

Special Tours Guided tours behind the scenes can be incorporated
for those interested in a special look at our unique collections including
the new Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery.
Shopping
The Museum Shop sells an extensive range of unique gifts and books and
is open from 10.00am to 5.00pm daily. After hours opening of the Museum
Shop for function participants can be negotiated for your function through
the Venue Hire & Functions Co-ordinator.

With views overlooking a lawned forecourt and the 16 metre skeleton
of a Sperm whale at the rear, the Balaena Café at the South
Australian Museum offers a truly unique dining experience. The
appetizing, flexible, contemporary menu and wine list suits all
tastes and budgets. Join us for lunch or simply drop in for coffee
and a selection of delicious cakes.
Catering is a specialty, functions can be held in the Café
or in one of the Museum’s many galleries. Conference dinners,
corporate functions, weddings and birthday parties (children included)
