BIRDS
Ornithology
INFORMATION:
Collection size: Over 48,000 registered and
8,000 unregistered specimens.
Collection specialties: Large collection
of catalogued stomach contents which could be used to determine
diets (for some birds, more than 50 separate samples available
for some species). Excellent collection of South Australian
species, both historical and recent. Extensive collection
of skeletons from South Australian species. Excellent collection
of eggs of Australian species.
DATA:Information currently available: Locality
(latitude/longitude); nearest named place; collector; date
of collection; retention of stomach contents; presence of
data sheet (weight, size, measurements, soft tissue, colours,
etc.).

FISH Ichthyology
INFORMATION:
Collection size: 8000 registered lots and
1500 larval fish lots to be registered.
Collection specialties: Fishes of the Lake
Eyre Drainage, inland fishes of Australia, deepwater fishes
off the southern Australian coast.

MAMMALS Mammalogy
INFORMATION:
Collection size: Over 20,000 specimens, skins,
skulls, skeletons and spirit material. Includes over 500 cetaceans
(whales and dolphins).
Collection specialties: South Australia and
arid zone small native mammals. Good collection of Thylacines,
Bats and Seals. Also Cetaceans, including a modern skeleton
preparation facility.
Cath Kemper is a cetacean specialist, concentrating on taxonomy
and general biological information acquired from dead cetaceans.
Current research projects: Vespadelus-
field identification. Sminthopsis-relationships between
species. Taxonomy of bottlenose dolphins in Australia. General
biology of pygmy right whales. Stranding records for South
Australia. Biology and diet of incidentally caught dolphins.
Recent common dolphin research news.

Position: Curator of Mammals
Field work experience: Terrestrial mammals,
collecting stranded cetaceans.
Professional experience: Biological survey,
past rodent specialist, editor of Australian Mammalogy, interstate
cetacean committees.
Research programs: Now specialising in cetacean
biology, particularly taxonomy and biology of stranded and
bycatch specimens and toxicology.
Students: Honours degree student studying
heavy metals in Spencer Gulf fish.
Research associates: Graham Medlin - specialist
in subfossil and owl pellet remains.
REPTILES & AMPHIBIANS Herpetology
INFORMATION:
Collection size: Over 50 000 specimens
Collection specialties: South Australian and
arid zone fauna.
Current research projects: Taxonomy of South
Australian reptiles. Phylogenetic relationships of Australian
reptiles. Fossil lizards.

DATA: Basic computerised specimen data (species,
location, date, collector). All localities with lat/long data
and coded for accuracy. Charges normally apply and can be
quoted on request.
