Matilda Michell from Sydney has won the overall prize of $50,000 in the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize.

Her work was one of the 101 finalists selected from the 837 entries received this year.

Twelve others from around Australia received prizes in each of the categories - paintings, works on paper, sculptures and objects and the inaugural Waterhouse Youth Art Prize.

Entrants from 12 countries submitted works of natural history art under the categories of paintings, works on paper, and sculpture and objects.

The competition is the most prestigious of its kind in Australia with an overall prize of $50,000 and a total prize pool of $114,500. The competition celebrates the natural world and encourages excellence in natural history art.

Judges this year included Barry Pearce, Head Curator of Australian Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales; Gary Shead highly respected artist who has won both the Archibald and Dobell prizes; Zoe D’Arcy, Director of Public Programs at the National Archives of Australia and Dr Suzanne Miller, Director of the South Australian Museum.
