The Art of Science!

Discover the connection between art and science in a day of events for everyone.

Enjoy a community day of free workshops, performances, short films, demonstrations, tours, diplays and an art trail at the South Australian Museum, and discover the wonderful collaborations when science meets art.

Felting Nature

Use felt to explore colour and texture. Experience the tactile nature of felting and allow the organic movement of the fibre to create beautiful and unique images inspired by the natural world. Best suited to 7+ years - adults. Presented by textile artist Barbara Binns. Places are limited.

An Explorer's Journal

Create and bind your own journal filled with your sketches of the natural world inspired by the museum's collections. Best suited to 5-16 years. Presented by local artist James Parker. Places are limited.

Weird and Wonderful Wire Insects

Make your own insect using wire, based on some of the amazing insects in the Museum's collection. Suited to all ages. Presented by local artist Judith Sweetman. Drop-in activity, limited places.

Mammal Mash-Ups

What do you get when you mix a leopard's spots, an elephant's tail and a monkey's head? A mammal mash-up! Create your own in this fun drawing activity. 


Sing-along Performances

Science has never been so much fun! Sing and dance with Professor Peabody and Professor Flint, the Scottish palaeontologist! Learn about science and have fun while you're at it!


Science Displays

Enjoy a range of science displays drawn from high school students, the Museum's Archives Collection, and the Malacological Society of South Australia. 

 

 

 

Project 21

Cost: Free

Imagine using high-tech aircraft and instrumentation to solve a 'real world issue'. High school students in South Australia have done just that! The results using innovative technologies, top-class methodologies and informed decision making will be on display during Science Week. 

The project is part of the Australian Space Research Program funded by the Commonwealth Government of Australia.

 

Drawing From the Past

Shell Display

See an amazing display of sea shells from local and international waters, including sea stars, urchins and a display of predatory molluscs. Presented by the Malacological Society of South Australia. 


SCINEMA - Science Meets Cinema

Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize™

This year we celebrate 10 years of the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize™. See the exhibition, talk to the artists and join guided tours of the exhibition. Vote for your favourite in the People's Choice Award and discover your response to the melding of science and art.

Professor Suzanne Miller, Director of the South Australian Museum, presents a talk about the myths, legends, and medieval truths that can be discovered from rocks. Best suited to 12+ years old.
