Autism and sensory-friendly fundraising appeal

The South Australian Museum is a special place where children learn, explore and develop curiosities about the world around them. But not every child experiences the world the same and for children with autism or sensory needs, a visit to the Museum can be loud, strange, and overwhelming.

Grandmother and sole carer, Lyn Temby, knows first-hand the challenges of raising a child with special needs. Her 8-year-old grandson, Lucjan, has been diagnosed with Autism, ADHD and Tourette Syndrome.

‘Looking after a child with special needs 24/7 is taxing and tiring. You have to choose your outings carefully. There are many places we just won’t go to because it’s too difficult.’

For the last three years, the Museum has offered autism and sensory-friendly morning and evening sessions for families like Lyn and Lucjan. These specially designed sessions allow children and their families to explore the Museum out-of-hours, without the loud noises and crowded galleries.

For Lyn, autism and sensory-friendly sessions have been life-changing - offering a relaxing, safe environment where participants have a shared experience and understanding.

Sadly, there are many children like Lucjan where an ordinary visit to the Museum is not possible. Without support from individual donors and corporate partners, we cannot meet the growing demand for our, already oversubscribed, autism and sensory-friendly sessions.
