Medical practitoner and anthropologist, Winterbotham married Constance Mary Moore in 1912. Appointed Captain, he served in the Australian Medical Corps militia during World War 1. He interviewed and corresponded with many Aboriginal people, publishing and lecturing on cultural practices and songs. In 1948 he donated his collection of artifacts to the University of Queensland and was Honorary Curator of the Ethnogolical Museum.
