There are so many ways your class can explore the Museum!

To book a free self-guided visit to the Museum, fill in the booking form below.

To book a learning program, please submit the school group booking form and include the name of the program you would like to book in the areas you would like to visit. Please note that your program booking is not final until confirmed by the Museum.

Self-Guided Visits

Free for all. This is the most common way for schools to experience the Museum. Please use the form above to book your visit.

The Discovery Centre is open from 10:30am-2:30pm on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. School groups are welcome to visit and ask our staff questions. Please be aware that this is a small room and students will need to visit in small groups while accompanied by an adult.

We have many resources to support your visit which can be used in the Museum or back at school. Explore our free education resources.

Museum Learning Programs

The Museum has a range of programs to suit all year levels and budgets.

Fully Facilitated Programs  

Deadly Science Fish Traps
Years 3-12 (1 hour)

This hands-on STEM challenge from Deadly Science explores the engineering principles behind Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fish traps, designed for sustainable harvesting across diverse environments. Participants will explore how these innovations accounted for seasonal cycles, river flooding, and species conservation, ensuring long-term ecological balance. 

Fossil Trolley
Years R-12 (1 hour)

What is a fossil? What can fossils tell us about ancient life? How do scientists use fossils? Find the answers to these and other questions by getting hands on with some real fossils and fascinating replicas. This program focuses on the noticing and questions and reasoning with evidence capabilities withing the South Australian Science curriculum and can be adapted to suit all year levels.

Minerals Trolley
Years R-12 (1 hour)

What is a rock and what is a mineral? How do their features influence their use? How are rocks and minerals formed? Explore the exciting and surprisingly colourful world of rocks and minerals. This program focuses on the noticing and questions and reasoning with evidence capabilities withing the South Australian science curriculum and can be adapted to suit all year levels.  

Operation Critical
Years 10-12 (1 hour)

Step into the world of resource management with this interactive workshop. Participants experience the uncertainty faced by those managing the earth’s natural resources — starting with only a mineral name, rock type, and locality before bidding. As details about revenue, business challenges, ethical dilemmas, and cost implications emerge, teams decide whether to keep, sell, or trade their mineral. This hands-on activity builds critical thinking, negotiation, and ethical reasoning for students and links economics, sustainability, and global issues to real-world events in the Science and HASS curriculums.

Pricing: 

$11 per student 
$9 per student equity pricing for Department for Education Category 1-4 schools 

A minimum spend of $160 per day of visit applies for all fully facilitated learning programs. 

Supported Learning Programs

These programs start with an introduction from a Museum educator before being led independently by schools.

Insect ID
Years R-3

Do you know the difference between a butterfly and a moth? What about a beetle and a bug? Go on a scavenger hunt to find different insects hiding in the Biodiversity Gallery. Before you start, you’ll find out all about how scientists classify insects by observing their physical features.

Fossil Quest
Years 7-12

Basil, our curious young explorer, has left a trail of clues across the Museum and it’s your mission to follow them. Use your investigative skills and problem-solving powers to solve puzzles, uncover fossils, and reveal the secrets of South Australia’s ancient creature. Every exhibit holds a clue. Are you ready to think like a detective and help Basil complete their fossil quest?

Self-Guided + Resource Hire 

Get more out of your self-guided visit by hiring a hands-on education trolley. These trolleys are packed full of samples and specimens which your class can handle and explore.  Trolleys will be set up in our learning space and come with a teaching guide which we will send prior to your visit.

This is a self-delivered version of our facilitated fossils and minerals programs. Suitable for all year levels.

Terms and conditions

Programs must be booked a minimum of two weeks prior to the event.  

Payment may be required prior to the event date. No refunds are available after 4 business days prior to your booking.  

A minimum of 10 school aged students is required to be eligible for a learning program.  

All groups must adhere to minimum supervision ratios as specified in the Department for Education Excursion Policy at all times when visiting the Museum.
