The collection comprises diaries, photos and genealogical data collected by Norma Gleeson during her work as a Welfare Officer in Amata, Northwest South Australia, in 1967-1968.

From 1956-1959 Norma was a teacher and Director at two kindergartens in Carlton and South Esk, Victoria. In 1960 she entered the Victorian Public Service as a clerk. She then studied at Monash University 1963-1966, completing a Bachelor of Arts with majors in history and anthropology.

On completion of her studies Norma was employed by the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, South Australia. Norma worked closely with the Aboriginal women and children at Amata, including training, education, employment and supporting families.

In 1968, Norma travelled overseas, and returned to Victoria to continue her passion for Aboriginal rights, working with the Department of Aboriginal Affairs through her many roles from 1972-1996.

The collection was donated by Norma's sister, Judith Sihombing
