Photographs and negatives associated with the CJ Hackett's journal A Letter About an Unknown World or Trip into North Western South Australia (AA122/01) while a member of the Board for Anthropological Research Musgrave/Mann Range and Ernabella Expeditions I (AA346) in 1933.

The photographs specifically used in this journal (AA122/01) have been scanned.

The following inventory of stand alone photographs includes photographs from the journal. In most cases a corresponding negative has been sighted and will share the same series number as the photograph.

This series also captures negatives in various formats: Nitrate, AGFA APX25, AGFA APX 100 35mm strips.

Note there are two photographs attributed to CJ Hackett in the Board of Anthropological Research (BAR) Musgrave/Mann Range Expedition 1 Collection (AA346).

Copy of Negatives and prints: Negatives and prints ex-AA122/07 (previously part Accession 737) were provided to the National Library of Australia under Mortlock Print Copying scheme 1989.

Nitrate negatives 4" x 3": (ex-AA122/12: previously part accession 736 and 737)

  • 192 negatives numbered from J-A33 1 - J-A33 192 of which 10 are missing/not found and 51 ceremonial images removed and allocated to restricted 'Watiku' binder.

  • Not all nitrate negatives have been scanned or image printed.

  • Nitrate negatives relocated to the Nitrate compacters.

Nitrate negatives 3.5" x 2.5" and Acetate negatives 6x6cm:

  • 36 negatives found in packet labelled Hackett 1933 in BAR (AA346). These may be by Stan Ferguson (uncle of Allan Brumby) and acquired by CJ Hackett. Some negatives have been matched to the journal photographs.

  • 33 acetate negatives copies of the nitrate negatives.

  • Ceremonial images have been removed and allocated to restricted 'Watiku' binder as reviewed by the Ara Iritija Project 2004.

  • Nitrate negatives relocated to the Nitrate compacters.

Ilford Safety Negative 35mm Strips: ex-AA122/7/1/1; ex-AA122/7/1/5 & ex-AA122/7/1/11 (previously accession 737). Contains restricted material

  • 150 negatives from 35mm strips (strips have been cut into individual negatives), some relating to Ceremony Pitjantjara land, have been matched with photographs and will share the same series number.

AGFA APX 25 Acetate negatives 2.25 x 3.25" (copies from nitrate negatives): previously accession 737

  • 151 negatives copies from nitrate. 15 negative sheets number range 1 - 192. Note number range 107-166 missing - ceremonial images removed and allocated to restricted 'Watiku' binder.

AGFA APX 100 strip 35mm negatives: 

  • Copies of negs from originals to produce "Letter about an Unknown World" (see AA122/01)

  • Ceremonial images removed and allocated to restricted 'Watiku' binder.
