The series includes 'Images used in Hurley's book "Pearls and Savages".'

Many of the titles given were taken from the identical photograph used as illustrations for the book. Some of them are legible on the bottom of the image. Few AP numbers have been noted for these photographs, and appropriate cross references made.

The alpha suffixes indicate the format of the images which may be stored separately to accommodate their formats appropriately. They are:
a = Lantern slide
b = 1/2 glass plate negative
c = 1/4 glass plate negative
d = Negative (in various sizes)
e = Photographic print.
