South West Pacific area of operations, Australian and Allied actions

The original images were probably captured by a number of War Photographers; the three men identified in the prints are: John Bagnall, C Bottomley and John Scarlett. The Department of Information (National Archives of Australia CA 34, 1939-1950) processed these photographs for censorship and subsequent distribution in Australia. They document the operations of the Australian 3rd, 6th, 7th and 9th Divisions in the South West Area of Operations between 1943 and 1945. This series illustrates action or operations from locations in Timor (Dutch) New Guinea.

A few of the photographs featuring identified individual service personnel were published in local and state newspapers; and where possible these articles have been cited in the item description.
