‘Myth of Min Tempi the Swamp Duck and Min Mantaba the Plain Turkey. By ‘Henry’ and ‘Jimmy’.’

Archive Collections / Ursula Hope McConnel / Series AA 191/12 / ‘Myth of Min Tempi the Swamp Duck and Min Mantaba the Plain Turkey. By ‘Henry’ and ‘Jimmy’.’
Original language (2 versions), then literal translation, then 2 free translations.

Free translation published in McConnel 1957:75-77; McConnel text #24. On the verso of leaf 1 is ‘Myth of the Yam and the Bailer Shell’ in literal translation, the free translation of which was published as ‘The Soft Yam and the Bailer Shell’ (McConnel 1957:50-51); McConnel text #14. On the verso of leaf 2 is page 2 of a literal translation of the text ‘Myth of Min Kena and Pikuwa, the Fresh- and Salt-water Crocodiles’, published in McConnel 1936a:91-92 (not identified as such); McConnel text #32.

This is clearly the same text as the one ascribed instead to Andyimban by McConnel 1957:75. Harry and Jimmy were probably Harry Edward and Lame Jimmy, who were what would now be called Koondumbins by surname. The Swamp Duck and Plain Turkey are the two totems McConnel recorded for the Koondumbin clan. Lame Jimmy had a daughter called in the records Anch-umpan who may have been McConnel’s informant Andyimban (Koongotema et al n.d.). So there may not be much in this discrepancy.
