Ngadlu tampinthi ngadlu Kaurna Miyurna yartangka. Munaintya puru purruna ngadlu-itya. Munaintyanangku yalaka tarrkarriana tuntarri.

We acknowledge we are on Kaurna Miyurna land. The Dreaming is still living. From the past, in the present, into the future, forever.

Cultural Sensitivity Warning
It is a condition of use of the cultural components of the Museum Archives that users ensure that any disclosure of information contained in this collection is consistent with the views and sensitivities of Indigenous people. Users are warned that there may be words and descriptions that may be culturally sensitive and which might not normally be used in certain public or community contexts. Users should also be aware that some records document research into people and cultures using a scientific research model dating from the first half of the twentieth century, and depicts people as research subjects in ways which may today be considered offensive. Some records contain terms and annotations that reflect the author's attitude or that of the period in which the item was written, and may be considered inappropriate today in some circumstances. Users should be aware that in some Indigenous communities, hearing names of deceased persons might cause sadness or distress, particularly to the relatives of these people. Furthermore, certain totemic symbols may also have prohibitions relating to the age, initiation and ceremonial status or clan of the person who may see them. Records included may be subject to access conditions imposed by Indigenous communities and/or depositors. Users are advised that access to some materials may be subject to these terms and conditions that the Museum is required to maintain.

Roonka Archaeological Journal, 1961 - 1968

The format of this notebook is a hard-cover exercise book; size of pages is approximately 200 mm X 260 mm, i.e. a little smaller than A4 size.
The spine of the notebook is labelled "G. Pretty - Excavations at Blanchetown", while the cover and inside cover are labelled "Roonka Archaeological Journal 1961 - 1968".

Inside the front cover are three loose sheets titled "Visit to Blanchetown to see aboriginal skeletons on Roonka". This is written by Norman Tindale and entries are dated 17, 18 and 24/11/1961.
This is a copy from Norman Tindale's "Campsite Journal", pages 683 - 685; the copy was made for Graeme Pretty on 18/5/1973 and is included in this notebook for background material.
Norman Tindale visited Roonka on 24/11/1961 following reports of heavy rain exposing buried remains. These three pages detail his observations on this visit.

Graeme Pretty's notebook pages are numbered 1 - 112.
The page dates are 17/3/1962 - 18/7/1964, which is different from the date range given on the cover.

Various trips to the Roonka site are recorded, with details of excavation work being undertaken. Advice was also being provided by Norman Tindale about this work.
Some of the work involved recording and recovery of skeletons exposed by erosion. Descriptions of the work, including sketches, plans, photographs and a sample of ochre are given.
The final entry in the notebook, dated 18/7/1964, starts on page 106. This is about the "Rescue Excavation of Grave, Roonka Station". This skeleton was being exposed due to erosion.

Copies of correspondence between Graeme Pretty and various people are glued into pages of the notebook.
Some of the correspondence is about Roonka and surrounding locations but some is also about other aboriginal sites and rock paintings further afield.

There are also hand-written extracts from the South Australian Archives that are relevant to this work at Roonka.

Clippings from the newspaper "The Murray Pioneer" dated 14/3/1963 are at pages 80 and 81. The articles are about the launch of a petition to name the new bridge across the Murray at Blanchetown the "Edward John Eyre Bridge".

There is a list of references at the back of the notebook (the last four pages).
There is also a loose-leaf typed index of the contents of this notebook inside the back cover.
In the sleeve inside the back cover is a series of hand-written references on green sheets of paper and also a copy of the petition to name the Blanchetown Bridge after John Eyre.
