Kangaroo ceremony recordings

THESE ITEMS CONTAIN RESTRICTED MATERIAL
There is little documentation accompanying the tape reels. It is known that Norman B Tindale (see AA338) visited Rice in 1963, recording in his journal: 'we had an hour at Musgrave Park and met Mr & Mrs Rice. He has been gathering texts for me with the tape recorder' ( AA 338/1/26, p.45). Further details have not been uncovered in the archive.

Recordings are as follows:

  1. Kangaroo story tape 1
    1x3 inch reel. Side A contains a short introduction followed by a Rice [?] family dinner. Narrative and discussion relating to the Kangaroo story is found on side B. Recorded at 1 7/8 ips.

Note that three tape reels numbered '5', '6' and '7' were found to be blank and were removed by the archive. The Rice tapes are listed in the S.A. Museum Speech and Sound Collections register (AA 338/12/4 ) at AS 704. According to Rice the collection also included a tape reel numbered '10'.
