The cards compiled in this box relate to Tindale's concern with using vocabulary to map distributional patterns of cultural and natural phenomena across Australia. Header cards include: Beings; Devil; People; Man; Body parts; Penis; Sex; Subincision; Testicles; Twins; Vulva; Woman; Breast. Each of these sections can be thought of as being organised according to either of two principles: subject or word. For example, the section 'Devil' contains the names for various beings, as opposed to the section 'Man', which contains the equivalent term in Aboriginal languages for the word 'man'. The latter would lend itself more readily to making comparisons. Based on published literature sources but Tindale has also drawn from his manuscript materials.
