Board for Anthropological Research Expedition G 'G1 - 91 Cockatoo Creek Sociological Data' and 'G1 - 80 Cockatoo Creek Anthropological Data'

Three card series containing sociological data and two card series containing anthropological data collected on the Board for Anthropological Research expedition to Cockatoo Creek, Central Australia, (Northern Territory) in August 1931. Each card has (expedition symbol) G stamped on the top left hand corner. Preceding the cards are two notes, one headed 'Cockatoo Creek. Series aged independently by two individuals'; the second reads: 'Card G89 missing'.

  1. G1 - G91 Cockatoo Creek Sociological Data
    This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, Native Name, Sex, Age, Tribe , Location and Date; and which have space for two photographs. Most cards have two black and white photographic prints attached, usually a front and a profile portrait showing head and shoulders or head and torso. The photographs also show (individual subject) numbers. Cards have 'Cockatoo Creek, C. A.' and 'Aug. 1931' printed in Location and Date headings. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 85. Some cards have notes on individuals on reverse, which appear to have been added later. There are multiple cards on some individuals, no photographs of some individuals, and sketches of some individuals.

  2. G1 - G91 Cockatoo Creek Sociological Data
    This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: in the first section: (individual subject) number, Native name, Tribe, Sex, Age, Secret name, White name, Where born, Subclass, Totem; the second section has headings for the recording of a similar level of detail about the individual's father, mother, siblings, spouse, and children. Cards have a final line to record information about the photographs taken and the location and date of recording of the data, and Remarks (over). This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 91. There are multiple cards on some individuals. Some cards have notes on the reverse recording extra information about an individual or related to activities of the Board, such as artefacts collected or casts taken. Cards completed by a range of hands.

  3. G1 - G91 Cockatoo Creek Sociological Data
    This series is a duplicate of that described above: printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: in the first section: (individual subject) Number, Native name, Tribe, Sex, Age, Secret name, White name, Where born, Subclass, Totem; the second section has headings for the recording of a similar level of detail about the individual's father, mother, siblings, spouse, and children. Cards have a final line to record information about the photographs taken and location and date of recording of the data, and Remarks (over). This series contains cards for individuals numbered 1 to 91, although one card is missing. Some cards have notes on the reverse recording extra information about an individual or related to activities of the BAR, such as artefacts collected or casts taken. Cards in NB Tindale's hand.

  4. G1 - G80. Cockatoo Creek Anthropological Data
    The cards are preceded by two notes: one which appears to relate to cards lent to AA Abbie in 1952; the second a card, 'Lips of [male] aborigines Cockatoo Creek, C. A. Aug. 1932 Depicted by TD Campbell' showing coloured pictures (probably pencil and watercolour) of three sets of lips.

    This card series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, White Name, Native Name, Sex, Age, Date, Locality, Tribe and Totem. A second section contains physical measurements and observations, and some cards have additional notes below this section. The reverse of the card records further physical measurements and observations. Note although this series contains cards for individuals numbered 1 to 80, not all cards contain data.

  5. G1 - G80. Cockatoo Creek Anthropological Data
    This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, Sex and Age; a section headed 'Relationships. Subject's:-'; and a third section for recording specific sets of physical measurements ('indices'). Most cards have been annotated with a tribal/language group name. Note although this series contains cards for individuals numbered 1 to 80, not all cards contain data.



Note that within any given series the amount of data recorded varies from card to card.

Note that the data cards contain many variant spellings of tribal/language group names. In the descriptions here the various terms and spellings have been reproduced, with what appear to be amendments noted square brackets. It has not been possible in all cases to supply corresponding tribal/language group names according to standardised spellings adopted by NB Tindale (see AA 338) and AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies).

This card series includes references to the following named groups: Ailpara, Alpira [Ilpira], Anmatjera, Aranda, Ilbirra, 'Ilpiaa really Ngalia', Ilpirra, Ilpirra [Ngalia], Jumu, Kukatja, 'Luritja or Ngalia', Luritya, Unmatjera, Walmala, Yumu.
