Board for Anthropological Research Expedition O 'O1 - 101 Ooldea Sociological Data' and 'O1 - 101 Ooldea Anthropological Data'

Two card series containing sociological data and two card series containing anthropological data collected on the Board for Anthropological Research expedition to Ooldea, South Australia, in August 1939. Each card has (expedition symbol) O stamped or written in the top left hand corner.

  1. O1 - O101 Ooldea Sociological Data
    This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, Native name, Sex, Age, Tribe, Loc.[ation], Date, and Remarks (over); and which have space for two photographs. Most cards have two black and white photographic prints attached, usually a front and a profile portrait showing head and torso. The photographs also show (individual subject) numbers. Cards have 'Ooldea N. W. of S. Aust.' and ' August 1939' printed in Location and Date headings. Note that some cards do not have photographs attached.

  2. O1 - O101 Ooldea Sociological Data
    This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: in the first section: (individual subject) Number, Native name, Other names, Tribe, Sex, Age (known/estim.), Date, Subclass, Totem, Loc.[ation], Where born, Territory claimed; the second section has headings for the recording of a similar level of detail about the individual's father, mother, father's siblings, mother's siblings, siblings, spouse, and children. Cards have a final line to record information about related BAR activities, including photographs, casts, physical measurements, anthropological notes, and specimens. On the reverse is space for further notes. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 101.

  3. O1 - O101 Ooldea Anthropological Data
    There are two interleaved sets of cards. The cards are preceded by paper slips on which are recorded numbers, apparently of missing cards. This card series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: in the first section (individual subject) Number, Native name, European name, Sex, Age, Date, Locality, Tribe, Totem; a second section has four columns for the recording of physical measurements, and a final line relating to BAR activities. The reverse of the card records the (individual subject) Number, a section headed 'Relationships. Subject's:-'; and a third section for recording specific sets of physical measurements ('indices'). There are two interleaved sets of cards; on the first card, data has been recorded on the front of the card; on the second card, data has been recorded on the reverse. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 101.

  4. 01-085 Ooldea results of sera for the detection of yaws
    This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: in the first section: (individual subject) Number, Locality, Date, Tribe. Sex and Age (occassionally the individual's name is included as well); the second section has ten headings recording physical measurements and blood group. On the reverse is space for further notes and serum test results . This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1-9, 11-19, 21-24, 26-33, 35-36, 39, 41, 45-50, 50A, 51-56, 61-64 and 66-85.



Note that within any given series the amount of data recorded varies from card to card.

Note that the data cards contain many variant spellings of tribal/language group names. In the descriptions here the various terms and spellings have been reproduced, with what appear to be amendments noted in square brackets. It has not been possible in all cases to supply corresponding tribal/language group names according to standardised spellings adopted by NB Tindale (see AA 338) and AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies).
