'A1 - 10 Mount Eba Sociological Data' and 'A1 - 10 Mount Eba Anthropological Data'

One card series containing sociological data and one card series containing anthropological data . The cards have (expedition symbol) A in the top left hand corner.

  1. A1 - 10 Mount Eba Sociological Data
The card series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, Native Name, Sex, Age, Tribe, Location and Date; and which have space for two photographs. Most cards have two black and white photographic prints attached, usually a front and profile portrait showing head and shoulders or head and torso. Cards 1 to 8 have 'MT. EBA, S.A.' and '1923' printed in Location and Date headings. Cards 9 to 10 (Annie and Dick Wombat have 'ADELAIDE' and '1923' printed in Location and Date headings. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 10. A2 and A7 have 2 sets of cards. These cards were made in 2011 from negatives not previously located. Data on individuals was entered by Museum Archive Access Officer.

  2. A1 - 10 Mount Eba Anthropological Data
The card series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, White Name, Native Name, Sex, Age, Date, Locality, Tribe and Totem. A second section contains physical measurements and observations, and some cards have additional notes below this section. The reverse of the card records further physical measurements and observations. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 10. The data on these cards appears to have been transcribed by NB Tindale in 1937 from the publication: F Wood Jones and TD Campbell, 'Anthropometric and Descriptive Observations on some South Australian Aboriginals, with a summary of previously recorded Anthropometric Data', Trans Royal Society of South Australia 48 (1924), pp:303-312. There is some overlap between individuals in this group of cards and AA 346/4/6 'South Australia Anthropological Data' described above. Note that the BAR expedition symbol A, here used to refer to the Mount Eba (South Australia) expedition in 1923, is elsewhere used to refer to an expedition to Wilgena (South Australia) in 1925.

Note that within any given series the amount of data recorded varies from card to card.

See related collections: AA 338 Tindale; AA 379 Wood Jones; AA 52 Campbell.

Note that the data cards contain many variant spellings of tribal/language group names. In the descriptions here the various terms and spellings have been reproduced, with what appear to be amendments noted square brackets. It has not been possible in all cases to supply corresponding tribal/language group names according to standardised spellings adopted by NB Tindale (see AA 338) and AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies).

This card series includes references to the following regions of South Australia: North Central.

This card series includes references to the following named groups: Kukata.
