Board for Anthropological Research Expedition C 'C1 - 64 Macumba and Alice Springs Sociological Data.' and 'C1 - 64 Macumba and Alice Springs Anthropological Data.'

One card series containing sociological data and three card series containing anthropological data collected on the Board for Anthropological research expedition to Macumba (South Australia) and Alice Springs (Central Australia) in 1926-1927. Cards have (expedition symbol) C stamped on the top left hand corner. There are two notes at the beginning of the series: one appears to be an extract from a ration station return (location not specified); the second a note that C3 (that is, cards relating to individual subject number 3) are missing.

  1. C1 - C64 Macumba and Alice Springs Sociological Data
    The card series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, Native Name, Sex, Age, Tribe, Location and Date; and which have space for two photographs. Most cards have two black and white photographic prints attached, usually a front and profile portrait showing head and shoulders or head and torso. Cards have 'MACUMBA, S.A.' and 'JAN. 1927' printed in Location and Date headings. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1-3, 5-11, 13-19, 21-45, 47-51, 53-60, and 62-67. There are 4 individuals that are unidentified and have been accessioned as Unidentified 1-4. Cards have (expedition symbol) C printed in the top left hand corner. These cards were made in 2011 from negatives not previously located. Data on individuals was entered by the Museum Archives Access Officer.



  2. C1 - C64 Macumba and Alice Springs Anthropological Data
    This series comprises printed cards on what data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, White Name, Native Name, Sex, Age, Date, Locality, Tribe and Totem. A second section contains physical measurements and observations, and further physical measurements have been typed below this section. The reverse of the card records further physical measurements and observations. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 64.






  3. C1 - C64 Macumba and Alice Springs Anthropological Data
    This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, Sex and Age; a section headed 'Relationships. Subject's:-'; and a third section for recording specific sets of physical measurements ('indices'). This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 64.

Note that the data cards contain many variant spellings of tribal/language group names. In the descriptions here the various terms and spellings have been reproduced, with what appear to be amendments noted square brackets. It has not been possible in all cases to supply corresponding tribal/language group names according to standardised spellings adopted by NB Tindale (see AA 338) and AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies).
