This oblisk was quarried at Syene errected at On (Heliopolis) by the Pheroh Thomthmes 111 about 1500 BC. Lateral inscriptions were added 2 centuries later by Rameses the Great. Removed during the Greek Dynasty to Alexandria royal city of Cleopatra and erected there in the 18th yr of Augustus Ceaser in the year BC 12. Through the patriotic zeal of Erasmus Wilson this oblisk was brought from Alexandria encased in an iron cylinder. Abandonded during a storm in the Bay of Biscay on 14/10/1877 recovered and erected on the Thames embankment in 1878. This oblisk prostrate for centuries in the sands of Alexandria was presented to the British nation in 1819 by Mohamet Ali Viceroy of Egypt - a memorial to .Nelson,and Abercrombie"
