  3. church tower. Annotated "John Cabot's Tower Branden Hill Bristol. This tower was erected by public subscription in the 61st yr of the reigh of Queen Victoria to commemorate the 4th Centenary of the discovery of the continent of N America on 24/6/1497 by John Cabot who sailed from this port in the Bristol ship- 'Mathew' with a Bristol crew, under letters patent granted by King Henry V111 to that navigator and his 3 sons Lewis, Sebastion and Sanctus. This rather savours of hair splitting for although Christopher Colombus did not discover S America until 1498 he discovered Jamaica in 1492"
