  1. three women each holding a skull-. Annotated "234. Same as No. 236 a little difference in posture. New guinea Rev. Thiele. Widows of the Azera tribe carrying the skulls of their deceased husbands hanging from straps showing on the photo. They carried the skulls wherever they went. The Azera tribe = 15-17000 people, live on the upper Markham River about 75 miles from the coast in the Mandated Territory of New Guinea. This was taken in Dec 1921, today (1929) it would be difficult to find a similar group. Rev. F Otto Thiele Lutheran Mission New Guinea Dornoch Terrace Brisbane."
