two men lifting rolls of grass matting. Annotated "28. Pumping up. In order to cross the heavy sand of the bed of the River Finke the tyres are let down from 110 to 70 lbs pr. After each crossing the whole 4 tyres have to be pumped up again. There are 9 of these crossings no wonder the freight is pounds 30 per ton for 350 miles"
camel train. Annotated "30. A string of 60 camels with 20 tons of loading 90 miles West of Oodnadatta. A camel carries from 6 to 7 cwt as a load ie 3 camels to the ton of loading. Many outback stations only get their supplies every 3 to 6 months. They then order say 5 tons of flour, 2 tons of sugar, 3 tons of petrol, 1 ton of tinned meat, tinned fruit etc and proportionate amounts of tea, coffee, biscuits, cheese etc"
two men lay out leather belting. Annotated "30. The best method of traversing heavy sand in the Australian interior is by fitting heavy leather belts around the wheels. The car is thus converted into a 'caterpillar' tractor and pulls on all four wheels. Heavy sand can be crossed at 20 mph over stretches of several miles at a time"
