Landscape photograph captioned: "N2975. Forlorn quest: Stoker JF O'Donoghue, of 35 Hill Street, Hawthorn, Vic., went to Ambon with the first relief party. He went to greet his brother - only to find that he had been executed by the Japs; together with 10 other prisoners of war. The 11 men were beaten before execution. Their "crime" - breaking camp to forage for food. Here is Stoker O'Donoghue standing beside the mass grave in which his brother lies buried. Note the care and attention given to the grave. Fresh flowers were placed on it by the prisoners of war just before they left the cmp for the jetty - and freedom. Australian official photo."

[The memorial lists the executed as: RA Bennett, GW Brown, AJ Collins, DA Evans, JE Kelly, AN King, J O'Donoghue, S Rainsburn, WC Ripper and CE Tucker. Nov 22, 1942.]
