Series AA 52/1 includes Campbell's diaries and field notes relating to his archaeological and anthropological fieldwork in South Australia and interstate. These are filed in chronological order in a ring-back folder (AA 52/1/1):

  1. Handwritten diary by Campbell of his 1920 trip to Cooper Creek. Campbell and his companions Prof Frederick Wood Jones (AA 379) and Prof TGB Osborn (AA 796) travelled via train to Marree and then via horse and camel buggies to Clayton Bore, Dulkaninna, Blaze's Well, Dead Man's Hole (on Cooper Creek) and Killalpaninna Station. The diary includes brief descriptions of artefact scatters and other Aboriginal sites investigated by Campbell, and references to two Aboriginal men, Camel Dick, who was living on Cooper Creek, and Herman, who was living near Killalpaninna.

  2. Black notebook labeled '1st trip Cooper Creek Diary and notes on implements'. This notebook includes a handwritten copy of Campbell's diary for the 1920 trip to Cooper Creek, his handwritten observations relating to stone artefact typology in the Cooper Creek area, and notes on stone implements transcribed from George Horne & George (Poddy) Aiston (1879 - 1943) book Savage life in Central Australia (1924) and other published sources.

  3. Handwritten diary by Campbell of his expedition to Millers Creek in August 1921 with Professor Wood Jones (AA 379) and Dr Pulleine. They travelled to Kingoonya by train on 11 August and then continued by car via Bon Bon and Mt Eba to Millers Creek, where they arrived on the following day. Campbell and his colleagues, accompanied by an Aboriginal man from the station, George Mitchell, collected some stone artefacts from sites near the homestead and others from a waterhole on Woodchopper Creek, about 10 km from the homestead. Notes accompanying some of the photographs taken on this expedition (see Series 6) identify George Mitchell as the 'son of the last king of the Kukata tribe' (Kokatha). The party moved on 15 August to Woolnomulla Waterhole on Millers Creek where they camped for several days. George Mitchell camped with them and showed them a number of Aboriginal campsites nearby where they collected additional artefacts. On 19 August they returned to Millers Creek homestead via Bamboo Swamp and stayed there for several days. The diary finishes abruptly on 22 August - the subsequent pages appear to be missing. Campbell and his colleagues evidently left Millers Creek on 22 August and travelled by car eastwards to visit some of the mound springs, including Coward Springs, The Bubbler and Blanche Cup, and then travelled by train back to Adelaide (see photos in Series 6). On the last few pages of the diary, Campbell records a number of Aboriginal words for stone artefacts, presumably obtained from George Mitchell, and some brief notes on tooth avulsion and Aboriginal food sources.

  4. Handwritten diary by Campbell of his expedition to Stuart Range in August 1923 with Frederick Wood Jones and his wife and Gordon Jacobs. They left Adelaide by train on 16 August and travelled to Kingoonya and then by car via Mt Eba to the Stuart Range opal field, where they arrived on 18 August. Over the next few days they made a number of short trips out from the opal field, collecting Aboriginal stone artefacts, insects and fauna specimens and samples of opal for the Museum. During these trips they visited Brumby Creek and Carringallana Waterhole where they met some Aboriginal people, including George Mitchell. They departed Stuart Range on 21 August and camped for several days at 20 Mile Waterhole on Carringallana Creek, where they collected some artefacts from nearby sites. Campbell and his party then returned to Stuart Range and spent several days collecting in that area. They then travelled back to Mt Eba via Mt Sandy and The Twins. They arrived at Mt Eba on 28 August where they obtained some anthropometric data on two of the Aboriginal men there, George Mitchell and Sugar Billy, and collected stone artefacts from campsites near the homestead and others near Lookout Sandhills. Campbell and Wood Jones also obtained anthropometric data on other Aboriginal people there, including Long Fred and Dorothy, and some of the 'Tarcoola blacks' who were camped there, Jenny, Edie and Charlie. They departed for Kingoonya on 31 August and travelled from there by train back to Adelaide, where they arrived the following day.

  5. Handwritten diary by Campbell of his trip to Flinders Island in January 1924, accompanied by Edgar Ravenswood Waite (AA 356), Wood Jones, Eldridge and others. The diary includes observations of the geology and natural history of the island and includes references to collecting insects, lizards and other faunal specimens for the South Australian Museum.

  6. Handwritten notes by Campbell on the return trip from Pandie-Pandie (1926), via Goyder Lagoon, Mt Gason, Mungerannie, New Well, Kopperamanna, Dulkaninna, Clayton Bore and Marree.

  7. Campbell's brief typescript diary of trip to western South Australia with Sir Aubrey Julian Lewis (1900 - 1975) in 1926. The two men left Adelaide on 7 May and travelled by train to Wilgena. From there they travelled to Kingoonya and recorded some vocabulary from Aboriginal people at a camp at Mullamulla. They then continued on to Ooldea, where they arrived on 12 May. At Ooldea Siding they met Miss Brown (a missionary attached to the Bush Church Aid Society) and Daisy Bates (AA 23). Olive Pink, described as 'an artist', was visiting Daisy Bates at that time. At the siding, Campbell and Lewis obtained some anthopometric data from some of the Aboriginal people present, recorded ethnographic data and also did some cine-filming and recording of songs. They also visited Ooldea Soak and collected some stone artefacts there. They left Ooldea by train on 20 May and arrived back in Adelaide the following day.

  8. 'Notes of 1926 Ooldea trip with A. Lewis'. This item comprises handwritten notes recorded by Campbell from Aboriginal people at Wilgena and Ooldea, including notes on the songs recorded during the trip and details of cine-filming, notes on Aboriginal diet, tooth avulsion, fire-making and other customs. The notes include references to an Aboriginal man, Tommy Ridge, at Wilgena and other Aboriginal people at Ooldea who sang songs for Campbell and Lewis, including Tommy, Billy, Sonny, Long Jimmy, Dingy, Jackie, Charlie and Maudie.

  10. Handwritten diary in a black notebook, 'A brief account of the two weeks trip of the South Australian Govt Leichhardt Search Party, August 1938'. The party included TD Campbell, Charles Percy Mountford (AA 228), Sir Archibald Grenfell Price (1892 - 1977) and the Oodnadatta policeman, JA Francis. Rex Lowe, the lessee of Mt Dare Station, who had reported the discovery of human skeletons thought to be those of Ludwig Leichhardt (1813 - 1845) and his companions on the edge of the Simpson Desert, also accompanied the expedition. Campbell and his companions from Adelaide travelled to Abminga Siding by train and then by vehicle to Bloods Creek Station and Mt Dare Station, where they arrived on 20 August. There Campbell and Mountford talked to some of the local Aboriginal people, including Old Carbine, while waiting for other members of the party to arrive. Three Aboriginal men from Mt Dare, Jack, Drummer and Jacko, accompanied the expedition as guides. They travelled east along the Finke River via Artillera Waterhole and Moorilperinna Waterhole and then on to Mt Alinerta, Weelina Waterhole and Mukarina Waterhole. From there the party continued eastwards to reach, on 23 August, the site of the skeletal material discovered by Lowe, about 10 km north-east of Ewillinna Waterhole. There they retrieved a number of human tooth fragments and other bone material, as well as several coins dating to the early 19th century and other European items. They left the site on 27 August and returned to Mt Dare, and then to Adelaide.
