Sepia photographic print, photographed by Townsend Duryea, mounted on dark olive green Cardboard. The photograph was transferred to the South Australian Museum Archives from the Royal Geographical Society in 1967.
The mounting board is embossed 'T Duryea', authenticating that the image was produced by Townsend Duryea. This embossing also dates the image as being produced post 1863, as Duryea practiced photography using his own name [rather than 'Duryea Bros.'] after this date. A piece of red binding-cord tied into a loop, (most likely for hanging from a nail or hook), passes through a hole made in the centre-top of the mounting board.
The caption below the photograph is handwritten in dark coloured ink, it reads; 'Native witnesses, Case of Yerdinna Jack, for Murder'. To the left of the caption, (below the image of the man in the riding costume), written in dark ink, is the name 'M C Donogan'. To the right of the caption, (below the image of the other standing white man), written in dark ink, is the name 'M C Shanks'.
The photograph portrays a group of eight men standing and seated in front of a painted backdrop. One European man stands at each side of the group of six Aboriginal Australian People. Of the group of six, three men stand behind three seated men. The European man on the left hand side of the image wears horse-riding clothes, including jodhpurs and a riding crop under his left [right in image] arm. The European man to the right of the Aboriginal group rests his right hand on the back of the closest chair.
On the reverse-side of the mounting board is written, in pencil;
A57435
The case of Yendinna Jack for Murder.
Group includes M Const Shanks
