"Kadina Natives"

Sepia mounted photographic print of 10 Aboriginal people, with sketched identifying key stapled to mounting board.

Photographed by Townsend Duryea according to the handwritten note on the identifying key; 'photo by Duryea when 1st in Wallaroo prior to 1893'. This Photograph was later presented to the South Australian Museum by Mr J Major [no date].

The photograph could have been produced anytime between 1855 to 1875, however it is likely that this image was produced between the dates of 1855 to 1863, by 'Duryea Bros.' before this partnership dissolved. This could be surmised as Townsend Duryea, who was well known for self-promotion and advertising, has not signed or embossed his details on the mounting board of the print. Another possibility is that the mounting board is not the original backing for the image.

AA80-1-2-1 illustrates a group of 10 Aboriginal people and their dogs, standing in front of a large shelter constructed of fabric and branches. The caption 'KADINA NATIVES' appears to have been scratched or painted onto the negative, resulting in the caption being a part of the print.

Stapled to the mounting board covering the image, is a diagrammatic sketch of the photograph [see AA 80-1-2-2 and AA 80-1-2-3]. Arrows point from each sketched individual to a short handwritten caption, identifying the individual possibly constructed by Norman Barnett Tindale (see AA 338).

The identifying key notes the individuals in the photograph to be the following people (left to right): ‘Shooting Tommy[,] died in scrub in a dray c/1902’, ‘Johnny Miller[,] boomerang thrower at Wallaroo race meetings’, ‘[crossed out] Tom [or] Ned Kelly aged c90 years c1927 - not Kadina Tribe’, ‘Amelia (hereditary Queen)’, [no note for this individual], Monkey Mary (burned alive in her hut while drunk)’, [details erased from paper - appears to have been ‘Shooting Tommy’], [no note for this individual], ‘Joe Fowler[,] worked for Mrs Troy at Prince of Whales Hotel, then for 15 yrs with W Major[,] Wallaroo (died in Wallaroo jail) in 1911’.
