'Elma Enalanga, 13 years, March 1965'

'Wax crayon-resist with water-colour wash. Palm Valley No. 1. Oil Rig. In Feb. all the older students in the school walked the 7km return trip to inspect the Oil-rig drilling site south of Hermannsburg near Palm Valley road in the James Range. This painting was done after the drillers struck natural gas in March; the gas ignited and the glow of the flames could be seen at night from Hermannsburg. Most of the children had not yet seen the burning gas close at hand and painted from hearsay.'
