In the course of duty some Australian Defence Force members are presented with foreign military awards for acts of gallantry or service that are not recognised by the Australian Government. Whilst they are entitled to accept these awards, they are not authorised for wear by Australian Service people.
The following three medals were received by Badcoe but not authorised to wear. From left to right on padded board:
The Purple Heart (United States of America) is awarded for being wounded or killed in any action against an enemy of the United States or as a result of an act of any such enemy or opposing armed forces.
The Wound medal (South Vietnam) is awarded to military personnel who had been wounded in action and to government officials wounded in the line of duty by the enemy or rebels.
The Air medal (United States of America) is awared for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight.
South Vietnam was previously called the Republic of Vietnam.
