These black and white photographs are from collections compiled by Graeme Pretty (AA 255).
They are copies of photographs taken by Mick Leahy in the Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea between 1933 and 1939. They have come from several different sources.
1. The photos on pages 1 - 5 appear to have come from a collection compiled by John Russel Black (SAMA1196). Each of these photographs has a stamp on the back - "COPYRIGHT by M.J. Leahy - Wau - New Guinea".
2. The photos on pages 6 - 25 are enlargements of images taken by Mick Leahy. They are mounted on card and have typed captions. It is not clear how they came to be in Graeme Pretty's collection.
3. The photos on pages 26 - 40 depict an attack on a highlands village. These are copies of Mick Leahy's images held by the National Library of Australia, Canberra and were sourced from the library by Graeme Pretty in 1976.
4. Page 41 - eleven black and white 35mm slides which are copies of 11 of the photographs on pages 26 - 40.
5. Page 42 - 16 black and white 35mm slides, 12 of which are copies of photographs on pages 1 - 5. The other four are from an unknown source.
The number of images on each page varies and are numbered as follows:
One image per page: number 1
Two images per page: top, number 1; bottom, number 2.
Four images per page: top left, number 1; top right, number 2; bottom left, number 3; bottom right, number 4.
Page 1:
1. Envelope post-marked 3rd June 1969; addressee is "Messrs. S.G. Reid-Smith & Co., P.O. Box 9, Maitland, S.A. 5573".
The name and address on the back of the envelope is "Milena Hübschmannová, Praha 4 - Spořilov 2727 Czechoslovasia". "German NG" and "R. Neuhauss" are also written on the back.
