Established in 2003, this distinguished competition which is owned and produced by the South Australian Museum, celebrates the year’s best wildlife and landscape photos, illustrating the splendour of our natural world, whilst also depicting the harsh reality of human impact on nature.

Last year the competition attracted a record 2,443 entries from more than 600 photographers worldwide and introduced three new categories: Astrophotography, Animals in Nature and Urban Animals. Building on the competition’s continuing growth and popularity, this year will see the introduction of the new Macro category.

Brian Oldman Director of the South Australian Museum explained why the Macro category is an exciting new addition to the competition.

“We are thrilled to announce the new Macro category which invites photographers to capture small subjects in nature that may be barely visible to the naked eye and present them to us at a larger-than-life-size,” said Mr Oldman.

In addition to the new category, this year’s competition will also include an increase in prize money for the following categories.

  • Category winners (including Portfolio Prize) will receive $1,500 (up $500)

  • Junior winner will receive $500 (up $200)

  • Junior runner-up will receive $250 (up $150)

As always, the overall prize winner will be awarded $10,000 and a holiday prize thanks to Coral Expeditions.

Australian Geographic have been the Principal Sponsor of the competition since 2013 and the Museum is thrilled to have their support once again as 2023 will mark 20 years of the competition.

Chrissie Goldrick, Editor-in-chief of Australian Geographic says,

“It’s encouraging to see this competition constantly growing and responding to the times. As we witness the growing pressures faced by our natural environments, it’s become more vital than ever that we use this opportunity to focus our lenses on all that is most beautiful, fragile and precious about our unique region of the planet.”

Entries are open from today until 27 January 2023. To enter visit: www.samuseum.sa.gov.au/c/npoty/

The South Australian Museum will host the exhibition of all shortlisted finalists from 26 August - 29 October 2023 before commencing a national tour.
