Most have a typed label giving number, sex and age on the obverse and many are annotated on the reverse "Photographs taken, and presented by the late Inspector P Foelsche Darwin." Most are pasted on board, and some are commercial prints.

In addition some are annotated on both obverse and reverse sides with additional identifying detail.

The number on the photograph bears no relation to numbers given to the glass plate negatives from which the images were copied but refer to the Folesche numbers.
