Supplementary to 'N. B. Tindale: Rough Diary of trip to Northern Flinders Range, S. Australia. Nov. 14 - Dec 18th, 1924. Incorporating various notes on the Aborigines'. (AA 338/1/3).

Item AA338/5/2 contains photographic images that are supplementary to Norman Barnett Tindale's 'Rough Diary of trip to Northern Flinders Range, S. Australia. Nov. 14 - Dec 18th, 1924' (AA 338/1/3). Notwithstanding its title, the diary incorporates research data acquired by NB Tindale and his associates, Herbert Mathew Hale (See AA 124) and Harold Llewelyn Sheard (See AA 290), on their visits to the three following locations from 1924 to 1928:

  • Northern Flinders Ranges, 1924

  • Fromms Landing, 1927

  • West bank of River Murray, near Blanchetown, 1928

The purpose of these trips varied. These include: a systematic study of the fauna of South Australia, observation of the traditional life and culture of the Wailpi people occupying the Flinders Ranges area, discovery and research of rock carvings and paintings at Malakai cave and Owiendana rock shelter, and archaeological excavation in the River Murray region and Fromms Landing.

Item AA 338/5/2, Vol. 1 contains black and white (b/w) photographic prints and b/w acetate positives. Tindale annotated most of the items, and this has been used as a primary source of information for photographs listed below. Images 28-35 have been identified by the South Australian Archive as being taken by Harold Llewelyn Sheard . A numbering system has been imposed onto the inventory items by the South Australian Museum Archives. Additional photographs relating to the Flinders Ranges trip are available in Vol. 5 of the inventory item AA 338/5/1.

Please note Tindale's abbreviations: S. Aust. (South Australia), Mt Serle (Mount Serle); Flinders Ra. (Flinders Ranges); N. Fl. Ra. (Northern Flinders Ranges); N. (North); W (West); R.M., (River Murray); Murray R. (Murray River); in (inches); ft. (foot, feet) m (miles)
