Archive Collections / Dr Norman Barnett Tindale / Series AA338/05 / Photographs relating to the Anthropological Expedition to Warburton Range, Western Australia, 1935.
Supplementary to 'Anthropological Expedition to Warburton Range, Western Australia by Norman B. Tindale. July - September 1935. Journal. Adelaide, S. A. 1935'. (AA 338/1/14).

This item includes photographic material mostly consisting of b/w photographic prints acquired by Norman Barnett Tindale on the expedition to the Warburton Range in Western Australia. The photographs are supplementary to Tindale's 'Anthropological Expedition to Warburton Range, Western Australia by Norman B. Tindale. July-September 1935. Journal. Adelaide, S. A. 1935'. (AA 338/1/14) The expedition was organised by the Board for Anthropological Research (BAR) and it was led by Tindale himself (July-September, 1935). The party members undertook extensive research among the Ngatatjara, Pintupi and Pitjantjatjara Australian Aboriginal people. Tindale's photographs, collated in the five volumes of this item, depict groups' lifestyle and customs including food gathering and preparation; methods of hunting, traditional tools and weapons production, string games, camp scenes, body decorations. Vol. 3-5 contain images of ceremonial activities, relevant geographical locations and rock art that are restricted to men only. Tindale's annotations on some of the photographs indicate that the party members also collected anthropometric and sociological data including work on genealogies.
Most of the photographs included in this item are taken at Warupuju (Warburton Range).
