AA 346/3/1
Papers relating to a trip to Mount Eba, Stuart Range, South Australia, in 1923.
Note that this expedition does not have a Board for Anthropological research alphabetical identifier.

  1. Cards containing anthropometric data on eight named individuals, and notes on a further two individuals. The information on the first eight individuals was collected at Mount Eba, Stuart Range, South Australia, in 1923, and these individuals are described on the cards as 'Kookita' and 'Tarcoola', and in the publication relating to this expedition as belonging to the 'Kookata tribe'. The last two individuals were examined in Adelaide in 1923, and are described as 'Ngunga, from Streaky Bay'. See: F Wood Jones (see AA 379) and TD Campbell (see AA 52), 'Anthropometric and Descriptive Observations on some South Australian Aboriginals, with a summary of previously recorded Anthropometric Data', Trans Royal Society South Australia 48 (1924), pp:303 - 312. See also series AA 346/4 for data cards grouped under 'Mount Eba' which appear to have been compiled later from these cards.

  2. Proofs for plates XXIX and XXX of the publication relating to this expedition (F Wood Jones and TD Campbell, 'Anthropometric and Descriptive Observations on some South Australian Aboriginals, with a summary of previously recorded Anthropometric Data', Trans Royal Society South Australia 48 (1924), pp: 303- 312). Each board has mounted photographic prints showing front and side views of the heads of four individuals. The identity of the individuals can be traced through this publication.

  3. Two 35mm negatives of the plates XXIX and XXX, described above.

Papers relating to Expedition B, Wilgena and Ooldea, South Australia, 7-21 May, 1926.

  1. Proofs for plates XXX, XXXI and XXXII of the publication relating to this expedition (TD Campbell and Aubrey J Lewis, 'The Aborigines of South Australia: Anthropometric, Descriptive. and other Observations Recorded at Ooldea', Trans Royal Society South Australia 50 (1926), pp.183-191.) Each board has mounted photographic prints showing front and side views of the heads of four individuals. The identity of the individuals can be traced through this publication. Those shown in the plates are described in the publication as belonging to the following groups: 'Willoorara' and 'Alinjera'.

  2. Two 35mm negatives of plates XXXI and XXXII, described above.

Papers relating to Expedition C, Macumba, South Australia, and Alice Springs [Stuart], Central Australia [Northern Territory], 30 December 1926-19 January 1927.

  1. Handwritten tables 'Key to subjects examined' in Macumba and Stuart, including details of 57 named individuals. Headings under which details are recorded include: White name, Native name, Age, Tribe, Group and Totem; and anthropometric data. There are also some pages of rough notes. These tables were reproduced in TD Campbell and Cecil J Hackett (see AA 122), 'Adelaide University Field Anthropology: Central Australia, No.1 - Introduction: Descriptive and Anthropometric Observations', Trans Royal Society South Australia 51 (1927), pp: 65-75. The individuals are identified as belonging to the following 'Tribes': Arunda, Kaidish, Luritcha, Urabunna, and Nelpara.

  2. Typed two-page list '1927 Expedition Aboriginal Song Records Macumba and Alice Springs', listing 34 items. Annotated by NB Tindale (see AA 338): 'Wax cylinders stored by Prof. Davies (see AA 70).'

  3. Leaflet advertising an 'Exhibition of Still and Motion Photography' taken on the 'University Expedition to Central Australia', 1927.

Papers relating to Expedition D, Koonibba, South Australia, 13-25 August, 1928.

  1. 'Report to the Board of Anthropology, The University, Adelaide', a four page typescript containing a general description of the Board's work, and a two page report on the expedition to Koonibba. The report notes of the Koonibba trip: that nearly 70 individuals were examined, 'all full-bloods', that 'The natives examined for the part formed a remnant of the West Coast tribe, the Kookita' and 'a few were survivors of groups belonging to the Ooldea district'.

  2. Four draft data cards recording information on individuals, including names, birthplace, parents' names and details of children. The individuals are recorded as belonging to the following 'Tribes': Mirning and Nulba. See also data cards in AA 346/4/9 and genealogical notes in AA 346/5/1.

  3. Papers headed 'Data concerning natives examined at Koonibba Mission Stn [Station], T D C[ampbell].' These papers include lists of names with ages, another showing birthdates, correspondence between TD Campbell and H Wollard, and results of physiological tests.

Papers relating to Expedition E, Hermannsburg, Central Australia [Northern Territory], 4-23 August, 1929.

  1. Twenty sets of ink fingerprints, labelled with name or subject number. While most of these appear to have been collected at Hermannsburg, two are labelled 'Pt Pearce 19/5/28'.

  2. Paper titled: 'Important Do not lose. Hermannsburg Ages of natives examined 1929'. Four-page handwritten list noting subject number, age, 'White name' and 'Native name' of 101 individuals examined, as well as some information on a further twenty individuals who were not allocated numbers during the expedition.

  3. Typed diagram showing kinship terms and relationships [appears to relate to Arrernte speakers].

  4. Three-page typescript ' Anthropological Research Records of Aboriginal Songs Taken at Hermannsburg August 1929'. This title is annotated in NB Tindale's hand: ' Wax cylinders stored by Dr Davies'.

  5. Two-page typescript report 'Hermannsburg 1929 Adelaide University Research'.

  6. Three-page typescript report 'Adelaide University Anthropological Expedition to Hermannsburg August 1929 Songs' signed 'EHD'.

  7. Three-page typescript 'Brief preliminary report' on expedition dated 10th September 1929.

  8. Various handwritten notes.

  9. Handwriting samples dated 23 August 1929.

  10. Six handwritten letters addressed to Dr Campbell. These are in an Aboriginal language, probably Arrernte, and may have been written by schoolchildren.

  11. Notes of records of physical measurements.

  12. Twenty-four pages of notes on physical data, each page headed with an individual's name.

  13. Sixty-three sketches showing the left palm, including lines and configurations. Each includes a subject number and some numbers which appear to be measurements.

  14. Twenty-five draft data cards, with physical data recorded. All include the number of the person, some also include names.

  15. Nine sketches which appear to show cicatrices or scarification on the torsos and arms of individuals. Each sketch includes the number of the subject.

Papers relating to Expedition F, MacDonald Downs, Central Australia [Northern Territory], 17 August - 11 September 1930.

  1. Two data charts '1930 H. T. [Hair Tract] Series' showing data for individuals identified by name and subject number. The data was collected at MacDonald Downs. These data sheets are numbered as part of the 'Hair Tract Series' numbers 2 and 4. From Accession 2355.

  2. Six palm prints, three identified as expedition members: Dr Pulleine (see AA 259), Prof. Harvey Johnston (see AA 161), and Prof. Cleland (see AA 60).

Papers relating to Expedition G, Cockatoo Creek, Central Australia [Northern Territory] 6-27 August, 1931.
Papers include:
  1. Handwritten notes 'HM Hale (see AA 124). Cockatoo Creek, Central Australia. August. 1931.' Appears to be a list of photographs (up to number 78).

  2. Two-page typescript list 'Adelaide University Field Anthropology Cockatoo Creek, Central Australia. 1931. Anthropometric Data by JH Gray (see AA 111) and TD Campbell.' Lists subject number, height and sex of 80 individuals. Also two-page handwritten draft of this document.

  3. Eleven-page typescript 'Cephalic Indices of Australian Aborigines' listing subject number, sex, age and 'Cephalic Index'.

  4. Folder 'Hand Creases 1931 Series G (Cockatoo Creek Northern Territory)' containing diagrams showing right and left hand creases and subject number, age, sex and date of documentation for eighty individuals. From Accession 2355.

  5. Folder 'Foot outlines 1931 Series G. (Cockatoo Ck. Northern Territory)' containing drawings of foot outlines of left feet and subject number or name for twenty-five individuals. From Accession 2355.

  6. Folder 'Spinal curves 1931 Series G. (Cockatoo Ck. Northern Territory)' containing diagrams and notes and drawings of spinal curves, subject number or name, age and sex for 44 individuals, including expedition members. From Accession 2355.

  7. Twenty-three data charts '1931. H. T. [Hair Tract] Series' containing data on individuals identified by subject number. The data was collected at Cockatoo Creek. These data charts are numbered as part of the 'Hair Tract Series' numbers 5 - 28. From Accession 2355.

  8. Three palm prints, identified as expedition member Prof. Wilkinson (see AA 370).

Papers relating to Expedition H, Mt. Liebig, Central Australia [Northern Territory], 4-25 August, 1932.
  1. Three-page typescript 'Public Library, Museum, and Art Gallery of South Australia Natives Studied by August 1932 Expedition to Mount Liebig, Central Australia.' Lists (individual subject) numbers, Sex, 'Tribe', Name, approximate age and class of 93 individuals. Original and two carbon copies. Annotated by NB Tindale. 'Tribes' listed: Ngalia, Pintubi, Yumu, Nambuda, and Luritja.

  2. Two composite panoramic photographs of landscape. The first, 'Panoramic View Mt Liebig' is labelled 'Photo 9', and includes small pencil sketches of landforms, and labels in NB Tindale's hand. The second, 'Giles Range from the east' is labelled 'Photo 10' and 'Photo: Prof. JB Cleland' and includes a landform sketch and geological notes in NB Tindale's hand.

  3. Black notebook, 'University & Museum Anthropological Expedition to Mt Liebig, Central Australia. August 1932 (Sixth Expedition). HM Hale.' Contains a handwritten diary from 4 August, 1932 to 25 August 1932, beginning with a list of expedition personnel, and including a brief daily account of Hale's work on the expedition, as well as some general observations. Following the dairy are a collection of clippings from newspapers, following the note : 'News cuttings appended give most details of trip.'

  4. Black exercise book marked 'Photographs' containing lists of photographs, in NB Tindale's hand.

  5. Folder 'Foot outlines 1932 Mt. Liebig. Northern Territory. Series H.' containing drawings of foot outlines and subject number for seven individuals. From Accession 2355.

  6. Folder 'Spinal curves 1932 Mt Liebig C. A. Series H' containing drawings of spinal curves and subject numbers for 28 individuals. From Accession 2355.

  7. 'Foot Print Records Mt. Liebig, 1932 Central Australia.' Foot prints of left and right feet of 31 individuals, with subject numbers. There are 33 prints, as some individuals had two sets of prints taken. From Accession 2355.

  8. Thirty-three data charts '1932. H. T. [Hair Tract] Series' containing data on individuals identified by subject number. The data was collected at Mt Liebig. These data charts are numbered as part of the 'Hair Tract Series' numbers 29 - 61. From Accession 2355.

Papers relating to Expedition I, Mann Range, South Australia (25 May - 6 August 1933) & Ernabella (7 August - 24 August 1933).
  1. One black exercise book containing packing lists for equipment in NB Tindale's hand.

  2. One black exercise book, containing a list of photographs, including portrait photograph numbers, and a three-page account headed 'Anthrop.[ology] Exp.[edition] To N. W. of S. A. in 1933' which includes an account of the work undertaken by HM Hale. Both these items appear to be in HM Hale's hand. Also inserted in the pages of the exercise book is a page in another hand headed 'Fry' which is a short account of the work of HK Fry (see AA 105).

  3. Three newsclippings relating to the expedition; two include photographs.

  4. Page headed 'Hacketts Bloodgroupings Mann Range Trip.' The list is divided into two portions headed O and A; individual subject numbers are listed under each heading and are also identified as Jankundjadjara, Ngalia or Pitjandjara. The headings are in NB Tindale's hand.

  5. Seven pages of a hand-written draft (numbered iii-ix) of what appears to be a report or article on dental and medical subjects. The pages have notes in pencil on the reverse.

  6. Page headed 'Blood Groups', listing subject numbers and blood groups. Note that the list is incomplete.

  7. Six pages of working notes tabulating numbered individuals and data collected.

  8. Various papers including rough notes, typescript draft of telegram about arrangements, railway freight docket, a page headed 'Anthropological Research 1933 Expedition' detailing expenses, and stores and packing lists in NB Tindale's hand.

  9. Hand and palm crease prints of 34 individuals, identified by subject number and also place name on reverse. Although title states ' Palm and hand prints Ernabella', the place names on the prints refer to the Mann and Musgrave Ranges. From Accession 2355.

  10. Folder 'Spinal Curves Ernabella 1933 Series I.' containing drawings of spinal curves of eleven individuals, identified by subject number.

  11. Folder 'Trip I 1933 Hair Tracts. Dr. Hackett Ernabella 1933. Series I.' contains charts showing hair tract data for seven individuals identified by subject number, also two blank hair tract data charts. From Accession 2355.

Papers relating to Expedition K, Warburton Range, Western Australia, 26 July - 6 September, 1935.
  1. Various notes relating to arragements for travel, packing, itinerary, personnel and finances, in NB Tindale's hand.

  2. Six handwritten pages of notes which appear to relate to vocabulary or botanical research - the notes have terms in an Aboriginal language on the left and corresponding notes in English and/or shorthand.

  3. Correspondence relating to personnel and arrangements (including itinerary, transport, stores and expenses), including correspondence with HL Fowler, Felix Arden, MJ Brockman, and AO Neville. This correspondence includes references to the recently-established mission in the Warburton Ranges.

  4. Drafts and copies of outgoing correspondence, lettergrams and telegrams from BAR members relating to arrangements for the expedition.

  5. Orders, receipts and packing lists for stores, and lists of expenses for expedition.

Papers relating to Expedition O, Ooldea, South Australia, 15-26 August, 1939.
  1. Empty envelope marked 'Ooldea Negatives Dr. Black (see AA 31) with thanks RM B[erndt?].

  2. Five pages of drawings which appear to be drawings of spinal curves of 13 individuals identified by subject number.

  3. Twenty-one sheets of hand and finger prints of individuals identified by subject number, most showing left and right hand and individual finger prints. The sex of the individual, date and place the prints were made (Ooldea) is also noted on the sheets.

  4. One typescript sheet titled 'Results of 65 sera from 63 natives at ooldea for detection of yaws. 9:9:1939. Serum Anthropological Expedition 1939.'; one handwritten sheet with Black's initials relating to serum tests results and anthropological observations for individuals 61-82, 83A and 85; and one 'Harvard University-Anthropometry' datacard with notes on the reverse side.
