Ernest Eugene Kramer expedition and travel diaries

This series includes the following items:

  1. Exercise book inscribed 'The Lords gracious dealings with us from Adel - AS. [Adelaide to Alice Springs] Written by EE Kramer Missionary from S-' [Switzerland]. Pasted inside front cover is a telegram from Rev. JH Sexton dated 31 July 1925 appointing Kramer as the Aborigines' Friends' Association's (see AA 1) first missionary. The first section of the book contains an account of the journey, via the Flinders Ranges and Oodnadatta, and arrival in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, on 1 January [year unknown]. This is followed by notes on grammar and translations [possibly in Arrernte] and general notes, some dated 1934. The centre section of the book is blank. The book has also been used, possibly at a later date, as a scrap book. There are numerous items, both pasted in and loose, including letters, receipts, photographs of the Kramer family and newspaper cuttings mostly about matters relating to Aboriginal people, but also poems, religious texts and accounts of the Kramers' work. These items often obscure the handwritten text. 23x18x3.5 cm.

  2. Rough or field notes of a trip west [from Alice Springs, Northern Territory] leaving on 11 May. Also 'Start 11 June 1928, South-West Expedition'. Notes end at approximately camp 26 of this expedition. Includes Aboriginal placenames and sketches of landscape features. Notebook, 16.5x10.5x1 cm.

  3. 'Cont. AFA Exped. [ition] Camp 28.' This notebook is a continuation of rough or field notes of the 1928 South-West Expedition. Kramer travelled with Mr JH Edgar and Aboriginal guides. The account ends at Camp 50, 2nd August 1928. Includes Aboriginal placenames and sketches of landscape features. Pinned into the notebook are diary entries for September 1934 and a letter dated 22 August 1937. 16.5x10.5x1 cm.

  4. Handwritten, written up version of the 1928 South-West Expedition based on the notebooks. Stored with the manuscript is a transcribed version (transcriber unknown) and one black and white photograph, probably taken by EE Kramer. Manuscript, 68 looseleaf lined quarto pages, housed in Albox album.

  5. The notebook begins and ends with various notes. Includes: 'May 1931. Diary start from Hermannsburg.' Rough or field notes of a journey west and north-west from Hermannsburg, Northern Territory, beginning on 20 May 1931. Includes Aboriginal placenames and sketches of landscape features. 16.5x10.5x1 cm.

  6. The notebook begins with a brief account of a trip north from Port Augusta, South Australia, in September 1952. Notes also start from the back of the book, including: a trip to Ernabella, South Australia, and Alice Springs (including a visit to Rex Battarbee; see AA 663); of a WEC 1952 Annual Meeting in Adelaide; and various notes and aphorisms. 16.5x10.5x1 cm.
