Edgar Ravenswood Waite first visited Lord Howe island in 1898 in the company of Mr Frank Farnell landing from the trawler "Thetis". Having only intended to stay three days but due to rough seas the "Thetis" returned to Sydney leaving them on the island for a further eleven days.
