Notes on cinefilms are as follows:
CINEFILM 1
According to the Museum Board of South Australia minutes dated 9 May 1946 and a letter to the Director, Herbert Hale, from Cotton dated 15 March 1946, the location of the film is Rapid Bay.
CINEFILM 2
'Two hundred Blackfish or Pilot Whales (Globicephalus Ventricosus) stranded at Port Prime on October 5th. 1944.'
On 5 October 1944, Mr EE King of Two Wells (SA) reported the stranding of approximately 200 large fish at Port Prime in Gulf St Vincent to a South Australian newspaper, 'The News'. Subsequently, the South Australian Museum was informed and Professor Thomas Harvey Johnston (Chairman of the Board and parasitologist, see AA 161 ), Mr Bernard C Cotton (cinematographer, conchologist and photographer) and Herbert Matthew Hale (Director, see AA 124) were taken to the site, courtesy of 'The News' editor the very next day. Upon arrival the team was confronted with in excess of 200 pilot whales, some of which were still breathing.
Approximately 50 individuals were located further north between Port Parham (SA) and Port Gawler (SA).
Notes and measurements were taken by Johnston who searched the intestines for parasitic worms and Cotton's interest lay in the squids and cuttlefish that fell prey to the mammals. For more information see 'The Public Service Review' Vol. LI, No. 10, Adelaide, 28 October 1944 and Hale's 'The First Hundred Years of the South Australian Museum, 1856-1956', Records of the South Australian Museum, Vol. XII, pp180-182.
According to Peter F Aitken (Mammologist), Hale corrected his identification to Pseudorca crassidens, the False Killer Whale. See Aitken, 'Whales from the coast of South Australia', Transcations of the Royal Society of South Australia, Vol. 95 Part 2, pp 94-10311 August 1971. Specimen evidence was collected at a much later date and registered at the South Australian Museum, M8384.
CINEFILM 3
'Pearl fishing.'
Footage of the third cinefilm shows Chinese businesses in Broome (WA). H Wise & Co., 'Western Australia Post Office Directory' records them for the following years (all dates are inclusive):
- LL Tack, merchant, 1921-1929 and 1934-1942/43
- Chin and Lee, bakers 1938-1942/43
- Weng Wah, tailor, not recorded
- Chin Lim, merchant, 1934-1942/43
- Fong Henly, tailor, possibly recorded as Henry, F, 1911-1912; Henly, Fong, 1913-1933; and Fong, Henly, 1934-1935/36 and 1941/42-1942/43
- Sam Sue, pearl cleaner, 1911-1942/43
- Hong Hing and Co., Merchant, 1921-1942/43
Unfortunately, Weng Wah is not recorded in the Directories. Given the above information all businesses were operational between 1941/42 to 1942/43. The film could predate to 1938/39 if Henly Fong's store sign was still up during his absence then between 1938/39 to 1942/43. The last record for all 6 businesses is in the 1942/43 Directory.
Directories are available online: http://www/slwa.wa.gov.au/find/guides/wa_history/post_office_directories (12 May 2005)
Notes on individual businesses are as follows:
LL Tack Merchant
According to Susan Sickert's 'Beyond the lattice: Broome's early years', 2003, Louey Ling Tack's business was situated in Lot 1 (used as a squash shop), Lot 3 (general store and residence) and Lot 10 (pearl dealing and rooms), Carnarvon Street, Broome at varying times.
According to Sickert, Louey Ling Tack was an Australian born Chinese who moved to Broome. Initially Tack traded as a pearl dealer in a building off the corner of Dampier and Napier Terrace. At a later stage Tack moved to Carnarvon Street where he leased a building from TB Ellies (born as Tudagala Badalge and later changed his name to Thomas Bastian); the ground floor used as a general store and the 1st floor as a residence. The building became vacant during WWII, subsequently infested with termites and then demolished after the war. Tack returned to Hong Kong to live. His son, Arthur Tack Fong Louey continued trading in his father's business name. Read for more info
Heritage Council of Western Australia 'Register of Heritage Places - Assessment Documentation', 22 April 2003.
Fong Henly Tailor
According to the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board publications 'Karrakatta Cemetery Historical Walk Trail', 1998 and 'Heroes & Humanitarians and other West Australian history-makers' Henly Fong's given name was Hsing Li Kuang Fong. Fong was born in Canton, China in February 1876 and arrived in Darwin Australia in June 1896. As a tailor by trade, Fong initially established a merchant business but later prospected for gold. In the early 1900s, Fong returned to his former trade in Cossack and then in Broome. He married in 1917 in China and his wife and son migrated to Broome from 1923 to 1935. During World War II, Fong was evacuated to Perth and remained there until his death in February 1957. He never returned to his family in China due to insufficient money.
The 1911 and 1912 Directories list a F Henry which conceivably could be a misspelling of Henly Fong's name. The 1913 to 1933 Directories incorrectly transposes the given and family names and lists the buisness as Fong Henly. From 1934, the Directories correctly list the business as Henly Fong.
According to Susan Sickert's 'Beyond the lattice: Broome's early years', 2003, Henly Fong's business was situated in Lot 7, Carnarvon Street, Broome.
Sam Sue Licensed Pearl Cleaner
According to Susan Sickert's 'Beyond the lattice: Broome's early years', 2003, Sam Sue was a licensed pearl dealer as well as selling items such as groceries, clothing and household wares. His business was situated in Lot 6, Carnarvon Street, Broome.
A photograph of Sam Sue is available on the State Library of Western Australia website.
Hong Hing and Co General Merchants
According to Susan Sickert's 'Beyond the lattice: Broome's early years', 2003, Hong Hing ran a general store which sold herbal remedies. His business was situated in Lot 7, Carnarvon Street, Broome.
