We acknowledge we are on Kaurna Miyurna land. The Dreaming is still living. From the past, in the present, into the future, forever.

The South Australian Museum is excited to announce the shortlist for the 2022 Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize.
The full list of finalists can be viewed here.
Commemorating the birth of the South Australian Museum’s first Curator Frederick George Waterhouse this biennial competition and resulting exhibition is a highly anticipated fixture on the arts calendar, allowing artists and audiences to explore the world of natural science through a range of diverse media.
Now in its 20th year, the prize is an opportunity for artists to investigate the world around them and present their perspectives on natural science. It encourages artists to make a statement about the scientific issues facing our planet and offers a valuable platform for them to contribute to the environmental debate.
This year the competition received a 23% increase in entries compared to 2020 across Australia and overseas. The competition judges were set the unenviable task of selecting just 71 finalists from a field of almost 500 entries. Final selection of winners will take place in Adelaide ahead of the opening in early June.
The competition judges for 2022 are:
Professor Alan Duffy, Astrophysicist, Swinburne University of Technology
Kelly Gellatly, Arts Leader, Curator, Writer, and arts advocate
Erica Green, Director of the Anne and Gordon Samstag Museum of Art
Brian Oldman, Director, South Australian Museum
The non-acquisitive prize will see $30,000 awarded in the Open Prize category, thanks to the generous support of IAS Fine Art Logistics, and $10,000 will go to the winner of the Emerging Artist Prize category, again supported generously by Hill Smith Art Advisory.
Exhibition visitors will also be able to vote for their favourite artwork with the winning artist receiving $5,000 in prize money for the People’s Choice Dr Wendy Wickes Memoriam Prize.
The winners will be announced an official launch held at the South Australian Museum on Thursday 2 June 2022. The shortlisted finalists and winners will be showcased in an exhibition at the South Australian Museum from 4 June – 7 August 2022. Exhibition tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for concession card holders with Museum Members and kids under 12 free. Tickets can be pre-purchased here.
