The expedition covers the period from 12 July - 3 August 1955. There are 61 blank pages between the final newspaper clipping and incomplete index. The journal is handwritten with annotations. Tindale wrote on the right-hand page, leaving the left page for annotations and drawings.

This journal includes the following:

  • drawings of specimens and documentation

  • correspondence

  • six hand-drawn maps, one map with annotations

  • flora sample

  • sketches and a copy of Tindale's 1934 'Native Route Across the Arunta Desert'



The expedition party included Dr E Giles (Ted, entomologist), Mr Harry Bowshall (South Australian Museum preparator, see SAMA 1043), Ron Hill (Botanic Gardens botantist and expedition technical assistant) and Norman Barnett Tindale. Mr Warren Bonython and Mr Thomas Robert Noel Lothian (Director, Botanic Gardens, Adelaide, SA) joined the expedition for part of the time.
