Board for Anthropological Research Expedition I 'I1 - 190 Mann Range and Ernabella', 'I1 - 190 Mann Range & Ernabella Sociological Data' and 'I1 - 190 Mann Range and Ernabella Anthropological Data'

Three card series containing sociological data and four card series containing anthropological data collected on the Board for Anthropological Research expedition to Mann Range and Ernabella, South Australia, in May - August 1933. Each card has (expedition symbol) I stamped or written in the top left hand corner.

  1. I1 - I190 Mann Range and Ernabella [Sociological Data]
    This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, Native Name, Sex, Age, Tribe, Location and Date; and which have space for two photographs. Most cards have two black and white photographic prints attached, usually a front and a profile portrait showing head and torso, and, for many individuals, a further card or cards with full body portraits attached. The photographs also show (individual subject) numbers. Cards have 'N. W. of S. Aust.' and 'May - Aug. 1933' printed in Location and Date headings, with further location details recorded by hand. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 190, and one unnumbered individual. Most cards have photograph negative numbers noted on the reverse. Note that there are multiple cards for some individuals, and no photographs of some individuals.

  2. I1 - I190 Mann Range & Ernabella Sociological Data
    This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: in the first section: (individual subject) Number, Native name, Tribe, Sex, Age, Secret name, White name, Where born, Subclass, Totem; the second section has headings for the recording of a similar level of detail about the individual's father, mother, siblings, spouse, and children. Cards have a final line to record information about the photographs taken and the location and date of recording of the data, and Remarks (over). This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 190. Some cards have notes on the reverse recording extra information about an individual, other information, or activities of the BAR, such as artefacts collected, photograph negative numbers, drawings made, or casts taken. Some cards include notes about tribal/language group names and distribution. Some cards have kinship terms listed on the reverse. The first few cards include notes by NB Tindale on tribal/language group names, pronunciation and orthography, and the note: 'symbol I indicates all exped.[itions] In year 1933. Nos. 1-129 Tindale & Hackett Exped[ition] to Mann Ra.[nge] May - July 1933 nos. 130 - 190 Anthrop. Exped.[ition] Ernabella Aug 1933 ref Oceania IV 1933, pp.99-106'. Many cards are signed by NB Tindale.

  3. I1 - I190 Mann Range & Ernabella Sociological Data
    This series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: in the first section: (individual subject) Number, Native name, Other names, Tribe, Sex, Age (known/estim.), Date, Subclass, Totem, Loc.[ation], Where born, Territory claimed; the second section has headings for the recording of a similar level of detail about the individual's father, mother, father's siblings, mother's siblings, siblings, spouse, and children. Cards have a line to record information about related BAR activities, including photographs, casts, physical measurements, anthropological notes, and specimens (artefacts) collected. On the reverse is space for further notes. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 190. Some cards have notes on the reverse recording extra information about an individual, relationships, kinship terms, or artefacts collected.

  4. I1 - I190 Mann Range and Ernabella Anthropological Data
    This card series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: (individual subject) Number, White Name, Native Name, Sex, Age, Date, Locality, Tribe and Totem. A second section contains physical measurements and observations, and some cards have additional notes below this section. The reverse of the card records further physical measurements and observations. Note although this series contains cards for individuals numbered 1 to 190, not all cards contain data. The first card contains notes, including notes by NB Tindale referring to later expeditions and orthography of tribal/language group names, and, referring to this card series: 'NB Tindale recorder, C J Hackett Anthrop.[ology]'.

  5. I1 - I190 Mann Range and Ernabella Anthropological Data
    This card series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: in the first section (individual subject) Number, Native name, European name, Sex, Age, Date, Locality, Tribe, 'Totem'; a second section has three columns for the recording of physical measurements, and a final line relating to BAR activities. The reverse of the card records the (individual subject) Number, a section headed 'Relationships. Subject's:-'; and a third section for recording specific sets of physical measurements ('indices'). This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 190. Cards have 'Copy checked CJ H[ackett]' on the bottom right hand corner.

  6. I1 - I190 Mann Range and Ernabella Anthropological Data
    This card series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: in the first section, (individual subject) Number, Locality, Date, Tribe, Sex, Age; a second section is divided into sections in which to record measurements and observations relating to specific physical features, including the following headings: Hair, Skin Colour, and Blood Group. On the reverse are sections to record data under headings including Anthropological notes and Pathological notes. Note that although this series contains cards for individuals numbered 1 to 190, not all cards contain data.
    These cards are located in Drawer 4.

  7. I1 - I190 Mann Range and Ernabella Anthropological Data
    The card series is preceded by a card with the heading 'Duplicates'. This card series comprises printed cards on which data has been recorded under the following headings: in the first section (individual subject) Number, Sex, Age; a second section headed 'Relationships. Subject's:-'; and a third section for recording specific sets of physical measurements ('indices'). The reverse of the cards is blank. Most cards have been annotated with an abbreviated form of a tribal/language group name. This series contains cards on individuals numbered 1 to 190.

Note that within any given series the amount of data recorded varies from card to card.

These card series contain references to the following region of South Australia: North West.

Note that the data cards contain many variant spellings of tribal/language group names. In the descriptions here the various terms and spellings have been reproduced, with what appear to be amendments noted in square brackets. It has not been possible in all cases to supply corresponding tribal/language group names according to standardised spellings adopted by NB Tindale (see AA 338) and AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies).

These card series includes references to the following named groups: Aluritja, Aluritja [Jankundjadjara], Andakeringa, Andakeringa [Yangkunja], Ankunjajara, Jankundjadjara (variants: Jankundjara, Jangkundjadjara, Yangkundjadjara, Yankundjara, Jankundjadjara [Jankundjara], Janggundja [Aluritja]), Mulatjara, Mulatjara [Jankundjatjara], Ngalia, Ngadadjara, Ndadjatjara, Pitjandjara, (variants: Pitjinjara, Pitjandjara, Pitjindjara, Pitjandjadjara).
Note on reverse of the first card in series 2, in NB Tindale's hand: 'Pitjandjara, Jankundjadjara - standard spellings adopted after analysis of these cards.'
