Much of the material dates from the nineteenth century, and thus reflects Tindale's interest in Australia's early contact period. The vocabularies relate to a variety of regions in South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales.

The second part of the series, AA 338/9/2, contains linguistic source materials, both published and manuscript, which do not contain Tindale's annotated observations. Finally, the third part of the series, AA 338/9/3, contains a variety of linguistic papers and research notes, including orthographic notes, correspondence, and working notes.
