Archive Collections / Dr Norman Barnett Tindale / Series AA338/05 / Photographs relating to Harvard and Adelaide Universities Anthropological Expedition, Australia, 1938 - 1939.
Supplementary to 'Harvard and Adelaide Universities Anthropological Expedition, Australia, 1938 - 1939. Journal and notes by Norman B Tindale.' (AA 338/1/15/1-2).

Item AA 338/5/15 comprises three volumes of photographs acquired by Norman Barnett Tindale while participating in a 'joint expedition organised by the Department of Anthropology, Harvard University, and the University of Adelaide' (see N. B. Tindale, 1940,' Results of the Harvard-Adelaide Universities Anthropological Expedition, 1938-39: Distribution of Australian Aboriginal Tribes: A field survey', Trans. Roy. Soc. of S. Aust 64 (1), 1940: 140-231).

The Board for Anthropological Research (BAR) Expedition party included Joseph and Bee Birdsell and Norman & Dorothy Tindale. Their extensive journey covered largely the eastern and southern area of the Australian continent (north of Cairns to Perth including Tasmania) with the aim of gathering information in the fields of physical anthropology and genetics (see Norman B. Tindale, 1941, 'Results of the Harvard - Adelaide Universities' Anthropological Expedition, 1938-1939: Survey of the Half-caste Problem in South Australia', Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (South Australian Branch), XLII (1940-41): 66-161).

Concurrently, additional information concerning tribal distribution and boundaries was obtained by interviewing approximately 2450 members of various Australian Aboriginal tribal groups.

The photographic material is supplementary to Tindale's 'Harvard and Adelaide Universities Anthropological Expedition, Australia, 1938-1939. Journal and notes by Norman B. Tindale' (AA 338/1/15/1 and AA 338/1/15/2). The images appear in the following formats: coloured transparencies, slides and 35 mm films, b/w photographic prints, slides, acetate negatives and corresponding contact prints and b/w 35 mm films. The photographs depict: food preparation; watercraft making and basketry; shield making; string games, camp scenes, etc. Some of the photographs contain extensive annotations concerning genealogies of people presented, while other photographs appear to be taken to demonstrate people of different 'genetic classes'. This item also includes photographs taken by A. Atkinson in about 1890-1900 depicting members of tribal groups in the Cairns district (in Vol. 1 and Vol. 2). The series was purchased by Tindale during the Harvard-Adelaide Universities Expedition. Images depicting some ceremonial activities and sand drawings are in Vol. 3 and restricted to men only.

See also related collections: Board for Anthropological Research (see AA 346); Joseph Benjamin Birdsell (see AA 689), and Hermann Klaatsch (see AA 168). There are copies of a motion picture (AA 346/9/13) concerning this expedition available in the South Australian Museum Archives.
